Goodbye SUN..

I have been using Sun Broadband since August of last year, and it has served me. Period. I wouldn’t really say it’s been great, because I get very inconsistent and unstable connection for the past 4 months. I have tried talking to their technical support, but I guess, this is really one of the disadvantages of a wireless connection. I think it is now time to say goodbye to Sun. I have work to do, and everyone knows that WAHMs like me rely a lot on internet connectivity. I know I could be more productive if I don’t have to restart the computer 3-5 times a day. I know I could do more if I didn’t have to wait 1-2 minutes just for a single page to load. My connection speed on average is this:

It IS faster during wee hours of the morning, from 12midnight till around 6 or 7 am. But the past weeks, even at those times, I still get disconnected several times everyday. It is simply not convenient for me anymore. Goodbye to SUN.. I am now saying hello to Bayan DSL.

I will be posting more information about my Bayan DSL connection once it gets installed. I applied today, so I have to wait between a day to probably a week for installation. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it won’t be at 20-50kbps on average. Even if it’s not 1.2mbps, I’m happy as long as it’s a steady and consistent 200-300kbps.

P.S.: I didn’t bother with PLDT. The horrific stories I have read online about the poor connection and even worse customer service is more than enough to keep me away.

Cool Dell Laptops Part 1

Having worked in outsourced call centers, Dell is one of the client accounts that I have handled. I am familiar with the good quality of the computers they provide, that’s why I chose Dell laptops as my first review. I love pastels, especially pink, so it’s really great that Dell stepped out of their normal, boring laptops and came out with really stunning designs.

The Dell laptops used to be categorized only as Inspiron (affordable), XPS (gaming), and the M Series (multimedia).

Fast forward to present, they now have Adamo, Alienware, Vostro, Inspiron, Studio, Studio XPS and the Mini.

Let me give you a brief profile for each type.

Mini (10v, 10)

The Mini series are, as the name implies, mini laptops. Or more commonly known now as mini netbooks. 10.1″ screens, and weighs about 2.6lbs. Perfect for people on the go. Powered with Intel Atom processors, up to 2GB memory, and up to 250MB hard drive, I can deduce that the Dell Mini series are small but functional, none the less.

Adamo

The Adamo Laptop can be defined in one word — LUXURIOUS. The silver or onyx aluminum finish gives a really classy touch to this line of laptops. It has a 13.4-inch High Def display, with edge to edge glass. How’s that for class, eh? Armed with Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4GB memory, and up to 256MB solid state drive, who would believe that this is a mere .65 inch? This baby can last for more than 5 hours on a single full charge. Pretty powerful.

Free Templates

There are quite a number of sites that offer free templates, both for WordPress and Blogger users. I usually get my base from these sites, and just modify the elements within the template and make my own header and badge. But for those who aren’t really very particular and would just like the ease and convenience of getting a free template online, let me give you a partial list of free blog template sites.

Here are some of the sites that I have visited and really liked:

Blogger:

  • Btemplates.com
  • Ourblogtemplates.com
  • Ipietoon.com

WordPress:

  • TopWPthemes.com
  • FreeWPthemes.com
  • Rock-Kitty.net

Happy template hunting!

Let's talk about DOMAINS

Why is Sam so addicted to getting her own domain?

Well, for one, it is quite nice because it’s what I can call “mine”, and it identifies me as “ME” and besides, advertisers like blogs with own domains. It shows that you’re serious about this business.

How do I get a domain?

Getting a domain is fairly easy. Just find a domain registrant that you’re comfortable with and pay the necessary fees. In a matter of minutes, you already have your own web address.

Are domains expensive?

Not really. The most popular choice for domains are those ending in .com, which costs anywhere between $6-10. Others such as .info and .net are cheaper, while some others that are more industry or area specific such as .asia, .ph, .us are more expensive. Why that is so is beyond me.

Where can I get my own domain?
GoDaddy.com is known for having lots of promos for domains. Namecheap.com is a fairly affordable site too. I have used both, and I haven’t encountered any problems with either site. I like Namecheap for their Live Support though. They were able to help me a lot when I had trouble setting up my domain with my Blogger blog. I like GoDaddy’s user interface better though. Better navigation, so it’s really easy to find your way around.

For those who own Blogger blogs and would prefer less hassle, Blogger offers a domain registration service with costs $10 and they will set it up for you. So you can use it right away with your current blog.

As for those who use WordPress.com, they also offer custom domain and domain mapping with costs $24 a year (Domain – $9, Mapping – $14).

How long will it take for me to be able to use my domain?
Won’t take you longer than a day. Based on my experience with GoDaddy and Namecheap, it just took me a few minutes and I was able to use my domains already.
