Although a lot of tools are available online, is it enough to rely on them for starters or would it be wise to invest on your own tools and equipment?
This seems to be a hard decision for most young musicians who want to start a career in music. Coming from a family of musicians, I personally know of a couple of relatives who resort to anything free online just so they can come out with their music.
Yes, granting that these kids are still in school, as parents or grown ups, I believe that supporting their “interests” (as long as they are valid of course) as much as we can is of utmost importance. Knowing when and what to invest on is important especially since this “musician” stage may be a phase in a child’s/teen’s/college student’s life.
Buying quality used gear, like perhaps from American audio mixers is a great way to show support to your child’s talent. Knowing that you’re still buying quality material for a lower price can definitely help them realize their dreams. Then when they do decide to pursue a career, they can slowly work on investing other materials for themselves which will also teach the children to put value on their hard work.
But for now, a basement music station using whatever means and equipment may be feasible. Then again, things that start in the basement may eventually come out big… like Apple, right?
